Hello, Shifters! Today’s Transformation Tuesday is brought to you by Dawn Strauss Berta, former teacher turned home-based travel agent. Here is her story!
What is your educational background? BA in music education, DC (Doctor of Chiropractic)
What is your work experience? Taught elementary instrumental music in an inner city school in NJ for 6 months, then quit to go to Chiropractic school to become a chiropractor. I have been a chiropractor since 2000, an online adjunct instructor for the past 12 years, and I have been teaching ESL online for the past 3.5 years. I recently started a home-based travel agent business that I am really concentrating on.
Why did you go into teaching? I was always good with breaking things down for people!
Draining
Why did you decide to leave teaching? I couldn’t handle the politics and all the other things besides the actual teaching of the students. I also could not find the type of job I was looking for. I wanted high school orchestra and in my area those type of jobs were impossible to find. I also didn’t like the way I felt after a day of teaching. I felt drained and miserable. I could not envision starting my own family and having children while being a teacher.
How did you discover your current role? From a friend who was having a lot of success. She was always talking about her travels and different trips she was planning. I wanted to start traveling more and this seemed like the perfect fit.
Travel
What is your favorite part of your new role? I love everything that has to do with travel! I love planning a trip for someone and it is something they enjoy and remember for the rest of their lives.
What is your least favorite part of your new role? Marketing
What advice would you give to someone transitioning from another career into your role? Like anything, success in this business takes a lot of training and patience and motivation. It does not happen overnight but it is very worth it!
